Nominations for the 2025 Southern Grampians Shire Community Recognition Awards, presented on Australia Day 2026, are now open!
The collection of rates from property owners is Council's primary source of revenue to pay for services that benefits the community through investment in utilities and infrastructure.
These investments include street lighting, maintenance of local roads, footpaths, drainage and also a wide variety of community services.
In simple terms, a valuation is an assessment of the amount a property would sell for on a set date.
All properties in the Shire will be valued every year in accordance with Valuation Best Practice Principles determined by the State Valuer General.
Valuations that will appear on your rate notice are based on levels of value as of 1 January 2025.

Historically, when most eligible ratepayers were automatically enrolled by councils, enrolment messaging was typically only promoted in the lead-up to an election. However, as council enrolment is now entirely application-based, it is important eligible ratepayers are able to apply at any time, not just during election periods.
If you are selling a property, you will need to obtain a Land Information Certificate.
The Local Government Act 1989 provides that eligible pensioners shall receive a reduction of rates levied.
Where multiple parcels of farmland are used to operate a single farming enterprise (SFE), a person may only be required to pay the Municipal Charge and the Fire Services Property Levy (FSPL) fixed charge once by applying for the single farm enterprise exemption.
