Dennis Heslin considers it a true privilege to serve as Mayor of the Southern Grampians Shire, bringing to the role a wealth of professional experience, a strong business background, and a deep sense of responsibility to the community he calls home.

Together with his wife Katrina, Dennis proudly calls Penshurst home. Here they have immersed themselves into the fabric of small-town life, rolling up their sleeves and involving themselves in local clubs and community activities. For them, being part of a small town isn't just about living there, it's about showing up, pitching in and getting involved.

Though relatively new to the region, they were struck early on by the warmth and generosity of the people. That early feeling of welcome inspired his commitment to ensuring that every resident feels heard, supported, and optimistic about the future.

By not affiliating himself with any political party or single issue, he has been able to focus completely on improving the Shire for everyone. He believes that local government plays a powerful role in enabling growth, creating opportunity and providing space for innovation. He acknowledges that it is essential to achieve this without changing the unique things that make a region special.

With a professional history in small business, investment and the building industries, Dennis is committed above all to responsible financial management of the Shire. He is dedicated to building trust in local government and helping to make Council a transparent, approachable and community led organisation.

Outside of Council work, Dennis is deeply embedded in the community through groups. He's a very familiar face at the Penshurst Lawn Bowls Club and the Penshurst Racing Club. These local connections keep him connected to the everyday experience of residents and help guide people-focused decision making.

At heart, Mayor Heslin is driven by a clear and simple vision: to make the Southern Grampians Shire the best possible place to live, work and thrive. He knows he is not alone in this and welcomes the shared efforts, insights and hopes of the entire community.

Cr Heslin is a Council representative on the following committees:

  • CEO Employment and Remuneration Committee
  • Reconciliation Action Plan Committee
  • Rural Councils Victoria
  • South West Victoria Alliance
