With the winter school holidays fast approaching, Southern Grampians Shire Council is ready to help local families beat the cold with a packed program of fun and affordable activities for kids of all ages.

Whether it’s movies and craft sessions, gardening, painting, triathlon-style challenges or even a circus comedy act, the line-up these school holidays offers something for everyone. Add in a variety of Library and Hamilton Performing Arts Centre activities, and there are plenty of ways to stay warm, dry and entertained.

Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor Dennis Heslin said the program offers a wide range of free and low-cost activities, making it easier for those staying close to home to keep the kids busy without breaking the budget.

“We know the winter school holidays can be tricky for families trying to find things to keep kids engaged, especially with the colder weather keeping people indoors,” said Cr Heslin.

“That’s why we’re proud to offer a diverse range of activities right here in our community, giving young people the chance to stay active, get creative and try something new.”

Highlights of the winter program include:

Spike the Echidna (Monday 29 June) For kids aged 4-12. Told with shadow theatre, Spike is an interactive experience for the audience, it is entertaining and fun, as well as a catalyst for a discussion about difference and belonging.

Find Your Sound with Soulty (Friday 3 July) For ages 12-25. Join local legend Maggie Hartley, for a hands-on workshop to help you Find Your Sound!

The Farmy Farm (Thursday 9 July) For kids aged 3-12. Join Kenny and Jenny for a day in the life of getting their jobs done with a tractor-load of circus and farming tomfoolery.

Family Triathlon (Sunday 12 July) For ages 12+. Run, swim and cycle with HILAC for an Indoor Triathlon. Three age categories with prizes in each.

“The program highlights the strong collaboration across Council services, bringing together a variety of ideas and opportunities into one accessible program,” Cr Heslin concluded.

Families are encouraged to explore the full program and plan ahead to make the most of what’s on offer across the shire.
