Southern Grampians Shire Council is inviting the community to provide feedback to help shape the Draft Road Management Plan, ensuring it reflects the needs, priorities, and safety of those who use our roads every day.

Developed under the requirements of the Road Management Act 2004, the plan will outline how Council manages and maintains the road and footpath networks within our care. This includes setting standards for our road and footpaths including inspections, maintenance intervention levels, and target response times to keep our roads and footpaths safe and accessible.

Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor Dennis Heslin said in this latest review, the draft plan will be refined to assist residents and others to report issues on Council and state managed roads, provide clarity on Council’s service standards and the intervention levels.  While some of this information is technical, we know our roads and footpaths are important to our community and together we can ensure our road and footpath networks are maintained to provide appropriate access where needed.

“Recent bushfire activity has highlighted the importance of maintaining critical road connections. Now more than ever, we want to hear from you about the roads that matter most to your community,” said Cr Heslin.

“The draft plan will include updates to the road and footpath hierarchy, along with refreshed inspection and maintenance timeframes. These changes aim to ensure the plan is clear, practical, and aligned with our community's needs.”

Starting Monday 16 June, residents from Rocklands, Mirranatwa, Victoria Valley, Cavendish, Moralla, Vasey, Glendinning, and surrounding areas are encouraged to meet with Council Asset Management staff at the targeted community engagement sessions.

The feedback and information gathered from community engagement sessions will be used to shape and refine the draft.

  • Balmoral residents - 7:30pm 16 June 2025 - Balmoral RSL Hall
  • Mirranatwa and Victoria Valley residents - 6:00pm 18 June 2025 - Victoria Valley Hall
  • Cavendish, Moralla, Vasey and Glendinning residents- 6:00pm 25 June 2025 – Cavendish CFA Shed

These localised community specific sessions will provide an opportunity to better inform the plan and share valuable insights.  Further community drop-in sessions are planned in the following weeks for Coleraine, Hamilton and Dunkeld. Times, locations and dates will be announced in the coming days.

“We’re committed to creating a safe and efficient road network that meets the needs of our community, but we can’t do it without your input.

“Your feedback will shape how we prioritise and maintain our roads and footpaths for the future,” Cr Heslin concluded.

The draft plan will be developed using nationally recognised asset management frameworks and legislative requirements, ensuring our approach to inspections, maintenance, and repairs is both strategic and sustainable. By carefully managing resources, Council can provide a long-term road network that supports safe access and meets the needs of all users.
