Southern Grampians Shire Council is excited to celebrate National Reconciliation Week (27 May – 3 June) 2025 with a series of events that acknowledge and embrace the rich cultural heritage of Australia’s First Nations peoples.

This year’s theme, "Bridging Now to Next," inspires us to reflect on our shared history and commit to building a more united, respectful, and inclusive community for future generations.

A highlight of the week will be a community walk, this year organised by Baimbridge College, on Tuesday 27 May 2025, starting at 10:00am from Gray Street Primary School and concluding at the new Melville Oval Pavilion.

Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor Dennis Heslin emphasised the importance of the occasion.

“This Walk symbolises our collective respect for Indigenous heritage, culture and people that play a vital role in our community.

“Together, schools, local organisations, community and Council representatives will walk in solidarity, showcasing our shared vision for reconciliation. National Reconciliation Week reminds us of the profound value of connection and shared respect.

“We are proud to stand alongside Winda-Mara and our broader community to honour the traditions, stories, and contributions of our First Nations peoples. These events provide us all the opportunity to listen, learn, and move forward together.”

The walk will be followed by guest speakers at the Melville Oval Pavilion at 10:30am, alongside a morning tea that offers a chance to gather and reflect.

Additional events during National Reconciliation Week include:

  • Colouring-In Competition for Primary Schools: Encouraging young minds to engage with reconciliation through creativity. Colouring-in entries will be available through schools or collected from the Hamilton Library and council customer service office at 111 Brown St Hamilton.
  • Movie Screening – The New Boy: A poignant tale of a nine-year-old Aboriginal orphan navigating life in a remote monastery. Free screenings at the Hamilton Cinema on 27 May at 4:00pm and 3 June at 6:00pm. Bookings are essential and are available online or on the day at the cinema kiosk.
  • Women’s Basket Weaving Workshop: Learn the traditional art of basket weaving in a hands-on session led by talented First Nations artists. Friday 30 May, 1:00pm in the Ted Kenna Room at the Hamilton PAC with a light afternoon tea provided.

National Reconciliation Week is a time to reflect on the steps we’ve taken and the journey still ahead. Council invites everyone to join these events, walk together, and foster meaningful connections that honour the past and inspire a brighter, more inclusive future.
