Wednesday 3 December marks an important date on the calendar recognising International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD).

This annual day invites us to reflect on the contributions, achievements and vibrant presence of people with disability in our region, while promoting a more inclusive community for everyone.

Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor Dennis Heslin said the day is a meaningful reminder of the role the whole community plays in strengthening inclusion.

“International Day of People with Disability encourages us to recognise the extraordinary contributions people with disability make to our Shire every day,” Cr Heslin said.

“Council is committed to fostering a community that recognises and celebrates diversity, removes barriers, and ensures everyone has the chance to participate.”

To mark the occasion, Council is proud to once again partner with the Hamilton Racing Club for the much-loved Party with the Ponies - a standout event now celebrating its 20th year. Over two decades, this event has grown into a joyful and highly anticipated day, brought to life by the excitement, smiles, and energy of participants from across the region.

Taking place on Tuesday 9 December at the Hamilton Racecourse, Party with the Ponies welcomes disability groups, community organisations, and residents from Hamilton, Ararat, Terang, Portland, Warracknabeal, Warrnambool and Millicent.

From 11:00am, attendees can enjoy a full program of activities, including an animal nursery, face painting, crazy nail station, a giant birthday cake and roving entertainment. The crowd-favourite Fashions on the Field will once again be a highlight, offering a wonderful opportunity for creativity, colour and celebration.

“International Day of People with Disability reinforces the importance of accessibility, equality and connection.”

“Council is incredibly proud to support events like Party with the Ponies, which reflect the welcoming and inclusive Shire we strive to be,” Cr Heslin concluded.
