Important Work Set for Lake Hamilton Spillway

Southern Grampians Shire Council will begin important works at the Lake Hamilton spillway next week improving long-term monitoring of the site.
Contractors are scheduled to commence on Tuesday 12 May 2026, with works expected to be completed in less than one week. The project has been carefully planned to minimise disruption, with the lake remaining accessible for the community throughout.
The program includes the installation of a new sensors to track ground movement, alongside detailed surveys to better understand how the area has shifted over the past number of years. CCTV inspections will also be carried out to assess underground services near the spillway.
Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor Dennis Heslin said the works are a proactive step to ensure the ongoing safety and performance of the spillway.
“Council is committed to maintaining critical infrastructure like the Lake Hamilton spillway, so it remains safe and reliable for years to come,” Cr Heslin said.
“The 2022 assessment undertaken by accredited dam specialist engineers engaged by Council identified a number of minor issues, many of which have already been addressed by our teams. These upcoming works allow us to take the next step, putting in place the tools and systems we need to closely monitor the structure and respond early if anything changes.”
Cr Heslin said the project would also provide valuable information to guide future planning.
“The data we gather will help build a clear picture of the spillway’s condition and inform any future investment or upgrade decisions,” he said.
