Southern Grampians Shire Council has formally adopted the Hamilton Moves Integrated Transport Plan at Tuesday night’s Ordinary Council Meeting, marking an important step forward in planning for the town’s future transport network.

Hamilton Moves is a long-term, community-informed strategy designed to guide how people move around Hamilton, improving safety, accessibility and connectivity. The plan has been shaped by ongoing community input and detailed analysis of local transport and movement patterns across heavy and passenger vehicles, public transport, walking and cycling.

Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor Dennis Heslin said the project began in March 2022, when Council invited residents to share their insights on how they travel throughout Hamilton.

Over the past three years, significant progress has been made in implementing these actions, including realignment of heavy vehicle routes, road safety improvements undertaken through secured state government funding, and adoption of the Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Policy.

Key projects such as addressing gaps within footpath connections referred to as missing links, footpath upgrades, and road safety enhancements have been instrumental in improving overall transport efficiency and safety within the Hamilton CBD.

“This feedback helped inform a comprehensive study that identified key opportunities to enhance the local transport network and support future growth. Over the past three years, Council has made steady progress in delivering actions identified through Hamilton Moves.”

Earlier this year, the next phase of the project commenced, with the community again invited to help refine and prioritise future initiatives.

“A 28-day public consultation process generated strong community interest, with valuable feedback received. In particular, submissions highlighted issues with safety, speed, noise and driver behaviour on the Southern Alternative Heavy Vehicle Route, with a focus on improving outcomes for residents and road users along Petchel’s Lane,” said Cr Heslin.

“As part of the adopted plan, Council has acted on this feedback by applying to the Department of Transport for a speed reduction (60kph) for the entire length of Petschels Lane. Council will continue to monitor driver behaviour (particularly heavy vehicle speed) and will liaise with the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator and Victoria Police for continued surveillance should it be warranted.

“Council extends its thanks to all residents who participated in the consultation process. Community feedback will continue to play an important role as the strategy is implemented and future projects are delivered,” Cr Heslin concluded.
