Hamilton Moves, A Transport Plan for the Future
Published on 23 January 2026
Southern Grampians Shire Council is committed to creating a safer, more connected, and accessible transport system for everyone that travels Hamilton. That’s why we’re excited to share the progress of Hamilton Moves, our integrated transport plan funded by the Department of Transport, which began in 2022.
In March 2022, we invited residents to share their insights about how they move around Hamilton. Community feedback received helped shape a comprehensive study of Hamilton’s transport patterns, highlighting areas where connectivity could be improved and opportunities for growth.
Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor Dennis Heslin said this community-driven approach ensured the plan accurately reflects real needs, prioritising safety, accessibility, and efficiency.
“Through interactive online tools, residents mapped out transport challenges and opportunities, allowing us to see Hamilton’s transport landscape from their perspective.
“Over the past two years, we’ve made significant progress in implementing these actions, including securing funding for road safety improvements, adopting an Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Policy and solar lighting around the Hamilton Lake and Cox Street redevelopment.
“Progress continues with the realignment of heavy vehicle routes, noting that heavy vehicles have been reduced on North Boundary Road.
“Key projects such as the footpath missing link upgrades and road safety enhancements have been instrumental in improving overall transport efficiency and safety,” said Cr Heslin.
Council continues to advocate to the state government on various issues, including the renewal of the Cox Street west lane, arterial road surface quality and safety, and an alternative heavy vehicle route.
TAC funding has been secured via the Safer Local Roads and Streets Program to treat safety issues within Hamilton and across the Shire. Work towards this began mid-January 2026.
Council is now seeking feedback to refine and prioritise upcoming projects as the next phase of the Hamilton Moves strategy commences.
“Council will continue to work closely with the community, neighbouring councils and state agencies to refine transport strategies and secure investment that supports a safer, more connected and more liveable Hamilton,” concluded Cr Heslin.
