Southern Grampians Shire Council is proud to stand in solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ community by celebrating the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT).

Observed annually on 17 May, IDAHOBIT is a Global Day of Recognition, celebrating diversity and promoting inclusion while raising awareness of the discrimination faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and other marginalised communities worldwide.

Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor Dennis Heslin said this year, Council invites the community to join us for a special event in front of the Hamilton Cinema on Friday 16 May. Join us at 4:00pm, as we fly the rainbow flag as a symbol of our support for the LGBTQIA+ community and hear from Council CEO Tony Doyle and WDHS CEO Rowena Clift.

“Flying the rainbow flag is a simple yet powerful act that demonstrates our commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for all,” said Cr Heslin.

Following the formalities, the celebration continues with a free screening of the heartwarming film Love, Simon at 4:30pm.

Attendees will be treated to delicious "IDAHOBIT Treats," including Rainbow Choc Tops, Skittles, and Rainbow Fairy Floss—a colourful way to honour the spirit of the day.

“IDAHOBIT is an opportunity for us to reflect on the importance of acceptance and equality for everyone in our community, by flying the Rainbow Flag and hosting this event, we reaffirm our commitment to standing against discrimination in all its forms and celebrating the rich diversity that makes our community stronger,” Cr Heslin concluded.

Council encourages all residents to come along, show their support, and be part of this meaningful occasion.

Together, we can continue to create a community where everyone feels valued and respected, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression.
