Dunkeld Volunteers Take Home State Honours
Published on 05 December 2025
Dunkeld has solidified its place as one of the top destinations in the state this summer. Southern Grampians Shire Council is proud to announce the Dunkeld and Grampians Visitor Information Centre volunteer team has been awarded a Highly Commended in the “Outstanding Contribution by Volunteers” category at the 2025 Victorian Tourism Awards.
This formal recognition from judge’s places Dunkeld’s volunteer service among the very best in Victoria, bringing much deserved appreciation to their exceptional dedication, professionalism, and community spirit.
Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor Dennis Heslin said the acknowledgement was an achievement to celebrate.
“For more than three decades, the volunteer team at Dunkeld has been an integral part of the visitor experience,” said Cr Heslin. “The volunteer’s welcome guests, share local knowledge, craft personalised itineraries and connect visitors to local businesses, events and regional experiences.”
“Their work has helped shape Dunkeld’s well-deserved reputation as a warm, welcoming regional destination and the Highly Commended recognition is a testament to the long-standing commitment of the volunteer team, who have collectively contributed more than 93,000 hours of service and welcomed over 564,000 visitors.”
Judges provided feedback praising the submission as having captured “the absolute heartbeat of regional communities.” They also commended the volunteers’ “passion and commitment to regional tourism,” noting “stellar letters of support and glowing recommendation/appreciation.”
Council is delighted that this strong showing has placed Dunkeld in the spotlight among Victoria’s leading regional tourism contributors.
“This is a moment of immense pride for our region,” said Cr Heslin. “For over 30 years, our Visitor Information Centre Volunteers have given their time, their heart, and their deep local knowledge to ensure every guest to Dunkeld feels genuinely welcomed. Coming in second place to the Melbourne Zoo is a victory in and of itself.
“Even though we didn’t take out the top prize, this result reaffirms what we’ve always known; that our volunteers are an essential asset to Dunkeld and to the Shire as a whole. On behalf of Council, I want to say thank you for everything you do.”
The recognition highlights how community-driven tourism and volunteerism play a role in shaping meaningful visitor experiences. It also underlines how grassroots efforts support local businesses, extend visitor stays, and enhance the region’s economic viability.
