Southern Grampians Shire Council has approved a planning permit for the construction of a new $10 million Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) depot in Cavendish.

The purpose-built facility will be located at 59 Darks Road and will support DEECA's operations across the Grampians region, including emergency response, bushfire preparedness, land management and public safety activities.

As the estimated cost of the proposed development exceeds $10 million, the decision of the application must be made by Council rather than under delegation by the Planning Committee or Council officers.

Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor Cr Dennis Heslin said the investment presented would strengthen emergency management capabilities while providing benefits for the local economy.

"This significant investment will deliver a modern operational base that supports essential services and emergency response activities right across the Grampians region," Cr Heslin said.

"Having these resources positioned locally in Cavendish will help support preparedness and response efforts while creating opportunities for local businesses, contractors and trades during the build process.”

The development includes the construction of depot buildings and associated works, new vehicle access from Natimuk-Hamilton Road, onsite car parking, and the removal of a small area of native vegetation and one large tree.

The site layout has been designed to accommodate the operational requirements of the depot while responding to the rural character of the area and site constraints, including existing infrastructure, drainage lines, native vegetation and Aboriginal cultural heritage considerations.

"Projects of this scale bring confidence to regional communities and contribute to local employment and business economy. We look forward to working with DEECA to see this delivered,” concluded Cr Heslin.

The planning application was publicly advertised and received no objections. Required referrals were completed in accordance with the Planning and Environment Act 1987 and the Southern Grampians Planning Scheme.
