Curious About Family Day Care? Information Session to Explore Local Op
Published on 08 October 2026
Residents interested in working with children, running their own business or finding a flexible career opportunity are invited to attend an online information session to learn more about becoming a Family Day Care Educator.
Southern Grampians Shire Council will host the free online session on Thursday 29 October from 6:30pm to 7:30pm, allowing prospective educators to learn more about the role, qualification requirements, available support, and the process of becoming a registered Family Day Care Educator.
Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor Dennis Heslin said Family Day Care is a home-based childcare service for children aged 0–12 offering a unique opportunity for people to build a career around their lifestyle, earn an income, and provide an essential service to local families. It also offers flexibility that is difficult to find in many other professions.
“Attendees will hear firsthand about the support available to help new educators get started, including assistance with registration requirements, regulatory compliance, and ongoing business support,” Cr Heslin said.
"There is a real need for additional educators across the Southern Grampians Shire, particularly in our smaller towns where access to childcare can be limited."
Currently, Southern Grampians Family Day Care educators operate in only three of the municipality's ten towns, and Council is actively seeking educators in all communities across the shire.
There is also a growing need for educators willing to provide care for children under 12 months of age.
The online information session will cover:
- What Family Day Care is and how it works
- The benefits of becoming an educator, including the flexibility to set your own hours
- Qualification and registration requirements
- The support available through Council's Family Day Care team
Unlike traditional employment, Family Day Care gives educators full control over how they work, with Council’s Family Day Care Coordination team supporting each step of the journey. Educators receive ongoing one-on-one guidance from a local coordinator, along with administrative support including bookings, payments, waitlists and government subsidy processing, removing much of the usual burden of running a small business.
“If you’ve ever thought about working for yourself, changing careers, or finding a role that fits around your own family, this is a fantastic option,” Cr Heslin concluded.
