The Southern Grampians is a Shire rich in heritage and defined by industry- leading agricultural practices, a deft entrepreneurial spirit and a strong legacy of military service. As a result, there are many plaques and memorials dotted across the breadth of the Shire.

Council has drafted a clear framework for how plaques and memorials can be considered, approved and installed on Council-owned land or buildings, and are inviting the community to have their say on the new policy.

The draft Plaques and Memorials policy seeks to ensure that these commemorations reflect people or events of outstanding significance to the Southern Grampians Shire and its history.

These new guidelines will also make certain that installations are appropriate to their surroundings, are low-maintenance, and are designed to avoid environmental or safety impacts.

Mayor Councillor Dennis Heslin has welcomed the draft policy, saying:

“Now that we have a clear policy to point to, we can ensure that all applicants are on an even playing field.

“All new proposals can now be carefully assessed against the policy to make sure that plaques and memorials serve the heritage of our community.”

The cost and installation of any new plaque or memorial will be borne by the applicant, while Council oversees installation and compliance.
