Council Rolls out Support Initiatives for Drought Affected Residents
Published on 03 June 2025
Victoria’s Southwest remains in the grip of a severe and prolonged drought that continues to place extraordinary strain on our local farming community.
Southern Grampians Shire Council continues to advocate strongly on behalf of our residents, pushing for increased drought funding and calling for the removal of the Emergency Services Volunteer Fund. While major relief will require action from the State and Federal Governments, Council is committed to supporting our community in practical ways using the resources we currently have.
Water-Conserving Support for Rural Properties
Recognising the water-saving sacrifices being made by many rural residents, Council is offering:
-
Laundromat vouchers for use by residents on rural properties. To access these, contact Council’s Customer Service Team on (03) 5573 0444.
-
Access to public shower facilities at:
-
-
Pedrina Park – open weekdays from 7:00am to 10:00am, and
-
Lake Hamilton amenities (near the boat ramp) – open 24/7, year-round.
Supporting Rural Residents Without Kerbside Collection
From Saturday 7 June to Sunday 24 August, Council will offer free waste and recycling disposal for rural residents who do not receive kerbside collection at outer transfer stations. Participating transfer stations will open one day each weekend, allowing eligible residents to dispose of:
-
Up to two wheelie bins of general waste, and
-
Up to two wheelie bins of recyclables, per household, per weekend – completely free of charge.
Residents are asked to bring their rates notice as proof of address and eligibility. No other registration is required. This service is not available at the Hamilton Transfer Station, as it is targeted specifically to those in rural areas.
“These might seem like small gestures, but when you’re managing a farm in drought conditions, watching every litre of water along with other daily stresses, small acts can make a meaningful difference,” said Southern Grampian Shire Council Mayor Dennis Heslin.
“We are trying to react to this unprecedented drought in a way that respectfully supports our community members, and we encourage any resident needing help with rates, property concerns, or mental health to reach out to us. We will always do what we can to support our community and help get you in touch with the right resources,” he concluded.
