Council Constructing Change Within Community
Published on 14 May 2025
Southern Grampians Shire Council is making a commitment to greater accessibility in the heart of the Hamilton Botanic Gardens, with construction now underway on the new Changing Places facility.
This much-anticipated project underscores Council’s commitment to inclusivity and accessibility, ensuring that everyone in our community - regardless of ability - can fully participate in and enjoy the spaces we all treasure.
Funded by the Victorian State Government as part of a statewide initiative, the Changing Places facility will provide larger, fully accessible toilets and changerooms equipped with a change bed, shower and hoist, designed specifically to meet the needs of people with high care requirements and their carers.
Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor Dennis Heslin said the project is an important inclusion for the community.
“The Changing Places facility at the Hamilton Botanic Gardens reflects our commitment to creating a Shire that is accessible and welcoming for everyone,” said Cr Heslin.
“We are proud to be part of this initiative, which not only improves access to vital amenities but also reinforces that people of all abilities deserve to enjoy the rich beauty and community spirit of the Southern Grampians.”
These thoughtfully designed amenities go beyond standard accessible facilities, featuring extra space and specialised equipment ensuring dignity, comfort, and independence for all users.
The site for the new facility is located at the south-west end of the Hamilton Botanic Gardens, near Kennedy Street.
Construction began on Monday 12 May 2025, with the facility integrated into the existing amenities block to maintain the gardens’ aesthetic and functionality. Importantly, there will be no disruptions to the current public toilets during the construction period.
Construction is expected to take approximately four-five weeks, depending on weather conditions.
“This project is a step forward in creating a more inclusive region, enabling families, carers, and individuals with high care needs to engage in community events and explore one of our most iconic spaces with ease and dignity,” Cr Heslin concluded.
