Southern Grampians Shire Council is proud to stand alongside First Nations peoples and communities in recognising and celebrating National Reconciliation Week 2026, held annually from 27 May to 3 June.

This year’s theme, “All In”, is a powerful call to action for all Australians to actively contribute to reconciliation and to work together towards a more united and respectful future. The theme reminds us that reconciliation is built through everyday actions, it requires commitment, understanding and meaningful action from everyone, every day.

Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor Dennis Heslin said the week provides an important opportunity for the community to reflect on the nation’s shared history.

“National Reconciliation Week is a time for our community to come together to honour the diverse cultural heritage of Australia’s First Nations peoples and acknowledge the connections they hold within our region,” Cr Heslin said.

“Council is committed to supporting an inclusive and respectful community where reconciliation is embraced through learning, listening and shared experiences.”

Community members are invited to attend a special Welcome to Country, Smoking and Flag Raising Ceremony to be held in front of the Hamilton Performing Arts Centre on Thursday 28 May at 10:30am.

Following the ceremony, attendees are invited to join a shared morning tea.

To further mark the beginning of National Reconciliation Week, Council is also inviting local primary school-aged children to participate in a colouring competition inspired by this year’s theme, “All In”. The competition encourages young people to explore the meaning of reconciliation through creativity and art.

Completed entries will be displayed in the windows of the Greater Hamilton Library throughout the week. Competition sheets can be collected from Council’s Brown Street offices at 111 Brown Street, the Hamilton Library, or through participating schools.

Entries close on Tuesday 26 May, with winners to be announced during the morning tea following the Flag Raising Ceremony on Thursday 28 May.

Council encourages all community members to take part in National Reconciliation Week events and continue building a future strengthened by respect, understanding and unity.
