Users of the Hamilton Indoor Leisure and Aquatic Centre (HILAC) will soon enjoy a cooler and more comfortable environment, with evaporative cooling systems set to be installed across the facility’s multipurpose courts.

As part of the 2025/26 Budget, Southern Grampians Shire Council committed to improving conditions at HILAC, following a successful community budget submission from the Hamilton Basketball Association (HBA).

The project will see the installation of three evaporative cooling units, representing a long-awaited improvement for players, officials and spectators, particularly during the warmer months.

The decision to install evaporative cooling systems followed detailed investigation and cost comparison. The chosen units - Smallaire Jumbo Systems - are designed specifically for large, open commercial spaces such as sports stadiums. They are up to 60 per cent more cost-effective to run and 60 per cent more environmentally friendly than traditional roof-package units, delivering efficient cooling across expansive areas.

Local contractor Fox Refrigeration will undertake the installation, with one system servicing court one, one servicing court four, and a third system servicing both courts two and three.

Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor Dennis Heslin said the project responds directly to long-standing feedback from the community.

“This will be very welcome news for everyone who uses the courts at HILAC,” said Cr Heslin. “During summer, temperatures inside the facility can become extremely high. Improving comfort and safety for all users is a priority and this upgrade will make a significant difference.”

Cr Heslin also acknowledged the strong partnership approach behind the project.

“Hamilton Basketball Association has one of the highest participation rates per capita across Victoria, which is a credit to the Association and the volunteers who support it.

“This project shows what can be achieved when Council and community groups work together toward shared goals,” Cr Heslin concluded.

Hamilton Basketball Association President Jason Thomas said the installation of evaporative cooling would significantly improve the playing experience during warmer months.

“For our players, officials and volunteers, this upgrade is huge,” said Mr Thomas. “In peak summer, the courts can become very hot, which impacts comfort, performance and safety. Evaporative cooling will make games, training and competitions far more enjoyable and will help us continue to support participation and growth in the sport,” Mr Thomas said.

The total project cost is $38,000, with Hamilton Basketball Association contributing $10,000 and Council funding the remaining $28,000.

Installation is expected to commence in mid-February. The courts will be closed for bookings between 8:00am-3:00pm while these works are completed. The basketball season will not be impacted, with works being scheduled around basketball games and training schedules.
