Works on eight pedestrian crossings in Hamilton will begin in early 2026 after the contract was awarded to Aviyanta Projects Pty Ltd at the December Council meeting.

The following locations will include:

• MacPherson Street, Raised Priority Crossing: 5 – 16 January 2026

• George Street, Raised Priority Crossing: 12 – 23 January 2026

• King Street/Bree Road, Raised Intersection with Splitter Islands: 2 February – 10 March 2026

• Alexandra Parade, Raised Priority Crossing: 4 –19 March 2026

• Shakespeare Street, Raised Priority Crossing: 20 March – 3 April 2026

• French Street, Raised Priority Crossing: 6 – 20 April 2026

• Kennedy Street, Raised Priority Crossing: 6 – 20 April 2026

• Tyers Street, Raised Priority Crossing with Splitter Islands: 21 April – 12 May 2026

Raised Pedestrian Crossings and Intersections are known to:
  • Slows vehicle speeds by creating a physical traffic-calming effect
  • Improves pedestrian safety by elevating crossing points and increasing visibility
  • Reinforces pedestrian priority and driver awareness at the intersection
  • Enhances accessibility with flatter, more continuous paths for prams, wheelchairs, and mobility aids
  • Reduces crash severity due to lower approach and turning speeds
  • Improves intersection legibility, making the road layout and pedestrian movements clearer

Council was successful in securing funding to deliver to make these necessary improvements as a part of an allocated $2 million under the Victorian Government's Safer Local Roads and Streets Program (SLRSP), with Council contributing another $110,000 to see the crossings completed.

The locations with Raised Safety Platform works will see crossings updated to raised wombat crossing like what was installed between Coles and Council’s Brown Street building on Brown Street.

Council has worked closely with schools and contractors to ensure the impact of works are reduced as much as possible for those locations close to a school. While some overlap will be unavoidable, wherever possible, school-based locations will be completed during school holidays.

The eight locations will include changes to traffic and pedestrian access while works are completed with Traffic Management Plans in place. Drivers are advised to obey any changes to road rules including speed reductions and detours while works are finalised.

This project covers the construction of seven Raised Priority Crossings and a Raised Intersection under the Safer Local Road and Street Program (SLRSP) which is funded by the Victorian Government to improve pedestrian and traffic safety across the state.

A Y-intersection will also be transformed into a T-intersection at the Glenelg Highway/Blackwood Dunkeld intersection which will be a separate contract to be awarded early in the new year for construction during the remainder of the 2025/26 financial year.

The TAC, in partnership with the Department of Transport and Planning, have developed the Safe Local Roads and Streets program.
