Australia Day


Southern Grampians Shire Council welcomes community members to nominate individuals, groups and events for an Australia Day Award. If you know a Southern Grampians Shire resident who is a great asset to the region and whose contribution deserves to be recognised, or would like to highlight an outstanding event that has enriched our community, then nominate now.

Australia Day Award categories include Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year (for people aged under 25), Community Event of the Year and the Council's own Community Recognition Awards. Awards will be presented at the official Southern Grampians Shire Australia Award celebrations held on January 26 in the Hamilton Botanic Gardens.
Note: unsuccessful nominations in the Citizen of the Year category are automatically considered for a Community Recognition Award.

There are two simple ways you can nominate:

1) ONLINE FORM (Preferred method) - Please click on the link below to submit your nomination online. Additional information may be emailed to to support your nomination.

2) PDF FORM - Either save this form to your desktop, complete and email to, or print a copy and complete by hand. You can also pick up printed copies from Council offices, Visitor Information Centres or via your town's Progress Association.

The Southern Grampians Shire Council's official Australia Day Celebrations are held annually on January 26 at the Hamilton Botanic Gardens from 10.30am.

The official program typically includes flag raising, presentations of Australia Day Awards, address from our Australia Day Ambassador, flag raising, Citizenship Ceremony, musical items and a free community BBQ at the conclusion of the function.

The wet weather venue will be the Hamilton Performing Arts Centre.

Events also take place in towns throughout the Southern Grampians Shire. The 2019 event details are below, please check this page closer to January 26 for details on celebrations in 2020:

Flag raising, guest speaker & free community breakfast.
Venue: Balmoral Swimming Pool, Swimming Pool Rd (off Natimuk Hamilton Rd)
Time: 10am start

Australia Day Celebrations followed by free cold meat and salads, BYO chairs, picnic blankets and drinks.
Venue: Heritage Park, off Henty Highway
Time: 5.30 – 8pm

Flag Raising ceremony, guest speaker; Sarah Hope and free breakfast.
Venue: Byaduk Sports Pavilion, 1 Byaduk-Penshurst Rd.
Time: 8.30am start

Flag raising, guest speaker; Snr Con. Chris Faille, Community Awards, shared morning tea, live music and $5 sausage sizzle lunch at the Bunyip Hotel.
Venue: Town Square, Scott St
Time: 9.30am start

Flag raising ceremony, award presentations, guest speaker, music & free Lions community breakfast.
Venue: Coleraine Tourist Information and Exhibition Centre, Pilleau St
Time: 8am start

Flag raising, local award presentations, guest speaker and free egg & bacon breakfast.
Venue: Dunkeld Memorial Park, Parker St
Time: 8am start

Flag raising ceremony, guest speaker, roast lamb lunch & dessert.
Venue: Glenthompson Recreation Reserve, Brady St
Time: 12 – 3pm

Flag raising ceremony, guest speaker; Peter Cook, Penshurst Citizen of the Year presentation and free Lions Club BBQ breakfast.
Venue: Penshurst Botanic Gardens.
Time: 8.30am start.

Flag raising and free BBQ breakfast.
Venue: Tarrington Community Park
