Chemicals and Hazardous Materials

Household and Farm Chemicals

The Hamilton landfill and transfer stations across the Southern Grampians Shire do not accept toxic household and farm chemicals. However, there are government schemes in place for disposal of chemicals.

HOUSEHOLD chemicals can be disposed of at the following annual "Detox Your Home" mobile collections:

Forthcoming Regional Detox Your Home Events

  • Horsham - 30 November 2019, 9.00 am to 12.00 noon. Horsham Transfer Station, 93 Kenny Road, Horsham.
  • Warrnambool - 29 February 2020, 9.00 am to 1.00 pm. Warrnambool Saleyards, Caramut Road, Warrnambool.
  • Ararat - 9 May 2020 Details TBA

The above locations also have permanent drop-off sites for paint, batteries and fluorescent tubes.

Farm Chemicals

Unwanted agricultural and veterinary chemicals can be disposed of through the ChemClear program. You will need to register your chemicals with ChemClear prior to collection.

Contact ChemClear on (toll free) 1800 008 182 or register on the website below.


If you suspect that your waste contains asbestos, please note that the Southern Grampians Shire Council’s collection service does not accept this substance.
