Hamilton Landfill

The Hamilton landfill, servicing approximately 17,000 people and commercial operators within the Southern Grampians Shire, isolates waste from our community while preventing the contamination of water and air.

Located on the outskirts of Hamilton (2.5km WSW of the town centre) and accessed via Elijah Street, the landfill accepts nearly 9,500 tonnes of material per year.

The landfill is currently licensed to receive the following wastes at all active cells: solid inert waste, putrescible waste and pneumatic automotive tyres shredded into pieces less than 250mm in all dimensions.

Landfill Projects

New Landfill Site
The tipping space at the Hamilton landfill is expected to be exhausted by 2017, which is why we have been working to extend the landfill since 2014.

The new landfill will have a minimum of 19 landfill cells and cover approximately 11ha of area, located to the west of the current site. The individual cells have a footprint of about 0.8ha, and an airspace capacity of roughly 63,000m3. This is expected to provide a landfill life of between three to four years.

Landfill Rehabilitation Project
The Hamilton landfill is currently being rehabilitated through the construction of a clay capping system. This is being done in accordance with EPA Licence conditions.

The restoration is expected to be completed in 2016-2017.
