Recognising Volunteers in our Region

16 May 2022

Southern Grampians Shire Council is recognising volunteers across the region this week in celebration of National Volunteers Week (NVW). Running from 16 – 23 May 2022, this year’s theme of “Better Together” celebrates volunteers that change communities for the better.

Council will acknowledge volunteers on our Facebook Page this week, highlighting some of the services within Council that could not exist without the work of dedicated community volunteers.

Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor Cr Bruach Colliton said Volunteers week provides an important opportunity to reflect upon the amazing work volunteers do within our community.

“We couldn't let National Volunteers Week go by without saying a huge thank you to all of our valued volunteers who improve the lives of others,” said Cr Colliton.

“Whether that’s getting involved in our emergency services to keep our region safe, to support our local kids sporting teams by cutting up the half time oranges, or leading the community via various groups – the work you do is invaluable.

“We have several areas at Council where we have volunteers on board, providing vital support to our community. Whether it is in helping our regions youth gain valuable driving experience through our L2P program, assisting residents and tourists at our Visitor Information Centres or delivering meals and having a chat with our senior citizens, we are extremely grateful for the time and effort these volunteers devote to making our region a better place”.

34% of Southern Grampians residents aged 15 and over volunteer in some way compared to the State average of just over 19%.

“The high number of volunteers in the region is not surprising and adds to the overall sense of community we have here within the Southern Grampians. National Volunteers Week offers the chance for us to reflect on that figure as it’s something to be really proud of,” concluded Cr Colliton.

Residents are invited to get involved by drawing a smiley face on your hand, take a photo and add a comment to any of Council’s volunteer week posts.
