Celebrating our communities in 2022

13 January 2022

Southern Grampians residents are invited to celebrate the achievements of outstanding members of the community at upcoming Australia Day events held around the region on Wednesday 26 January 2022.

Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor Bruach Colliton said being able to celebrate the achievements of those in our community who go above and beyond to support others is a special opportunity.

“For those of us who live and work in the Southern Grampians, we are privileged to know many who contribute in a significant way through their support of others and by giving back to those in our region,” said Cr Colliton.

“Each year Australia Day provides residents a special opportunity to celebrate those individuals and groups who make an outstanding contribution. In facing the challenges this ongoing pandemic has and will continue to present, it’s now more important than ever to celebrate when we can in a COVID safe way.”

Australia Day celebrations will be held in townships across the Southern Grampians with the official celebration being held at the Hamilton Botanic Gardens from 10:30am.

“Our official event this year will be held at the Hamilton Botanic Gardens where COVID safe catering will be available as well as live music from some of our local talented musicians,” said Cr Colliton. “We will also be officially welcoming a number of new citizens to our beautiful region so come down to the Gardens and enjoy the festivities.”

Winners of Australia Day Awards will be announced across four categories:

  • Young Citizen of the Year (for residents aged under 25).

  • Citizen of the Year (for residents over 25).

  • The Community Event of the Year to the group or person who has staged the most outstanding community event, between 30 October 2020 and 29 October 2021.

  • Community Recognition for an individual/group based in the Southern Grampians who has made a significant contribution to the local community in the current year or over a number of years.

This year’s celebrations are assisted by the Australian Government through the National Australia Day Council.
