Dog park closed – potential canine parvovirus contamination

25 February 2022

Southern Grampians Shire Council have taken preventative measures to close the Dog Park at Lake Hamilton after potential contamination for Canine Parvovirus was identified. The Dog Park will be closed Saturday 26 February – Sunday 27 February 2022, reopening Monday 28 February.

Southern Grampians Shire Council Local Laws Team Leader Jason Barker said these are preventative measures after potential contamination was identified.
“The Dog Park at Lake Hamilton will remain closed over the weekend as we undertake a thorough cleaning process,” said Mr Barker.

“Luckily within the Southern Grampians region we usually see low rates of confirmed Canine Parvovirus cases so we are taking some preventative measures by closing the park for the weekend to allow us to clean the area after a potential exposure was identified.

“Parvovirus can be quite a nasty illness that severely impacts the health of unvaccinated animals which is why we advocate for vaccination in our pets. The park will reopen once the cleaning process has been completed,” Mr Barker concluded.

Cox Street Vets Clinic Lead Kristabel Lewis said the best way to protect your pet from the virus is by keeping up to date with vaccination.

“The best way you can protect your dog is by keeping up with vaccinations and by being a responsible pet owner,” said Dr Lewis. “This includes picking up after your animal and disposing of waste correctly.”

“Symptoms of parvovirus to look out for in your pet including vomiting, diarrhorea, and sudden and severe weakness.”

“If you have any concerns about your animal’s health, please get in touch with your local vet,” concluded Dr Lewis.
