Step up to help clean up our region

9 February 2022

Southern Grampians residents are invited to get outside, step up and get involved with local clean-up activities this Clean Up Australia Day.

Partnering with the Hamilton Rotary Club, Council is encouraging community members to register participation as an individual, group or organisation to help reduce discarded waste within our region.

Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor Bruach Colliton said it’s a really simple and easy way residents young and old can get involved to help improve the overall health of our environment and to make a positive contribution to the region.

“Taking part in Clean Up Australia is a fantastic way to get outside in our beautiful shire and to be involved in an activity that benefits so many in our community – humans, animals and plants alike,” said Cr Colliton.

“Cleaning up our region is a uniting experience which provides us all with an important opportunity to not only reflect upon local environmental health but also provides a chance to think about future sustainability.

“Whilst our collective clean-up work should not be limited to just one day of the year, this campaign provides us with a very real reminder that hard work is required to help keep this breathtaking landscape pristine and free of litter for everyone big and small to enjoy.”

Traditionally celebrated annually on the first Sunday in March, this year residents are invited to take part on Friday 4 March 2022 from 9:30am with the opportunity for schools, organisations, individuals, families and community groups to get involved.

“If you're interested in spending a rewarding morning lending a helping hand to the community, this is your chance,” concluded Cr Colliton. “Grab your mates, co-workers and family members and get cleaning.”

Results from the 2020 Rubbish Report as compiled from Clean Up Australia volunteers recorded the main rubbish items collected across the State included 29% plastics, 11% soft plastics, 13% glass which had all increased from 2019 collection data.

This year, Council and Rotary will make a joint effort to target areas in need of clean up so residents are encouraged to register by contacting Council Customer Service Team on 5573 0444 or by email at council@sthgrampians.vic.gov.au
