Reduce, reuse and recycle - National Recycling Week is here

5 NOVEMBER 2021

Council is celebrating National Recycling Week from 8 -14 November 2021 to help promote effective recycling practices across the region.

Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor Bruach Colliton said the week is the perfect opportunity for residents to review their recycling and waste practices and also to re-familiarise themselves with local services.

“National Recycling Week is a great opportunity to review our own recycling practices to identify improvements - whether it’s in the household or business. It’s also a great opportunity to explore alternate practices by trying something new and making the most of local services,” said Cr Colliton.

“During recycling week, Council will feature helpful resources and videos via Council’s Facebook page where we invite residents to share their top recycling tips and photos with the community. The best entry will win a worm farm to help continue your recycling journey.”

‘Buy Recycled’ stencils will also be painted on the footpath in front of Hamilton businesses that sell recycled items or products made from recycled materials. Residents can check the Southern Grampians Zero Waste Map featured on the Council website at https://www.sthgrampians.vic.gov.au/Page/Page.aspx?Page_Id=3306 for options to buy recycled items across the region.

As part of Council’s continued commitment to promote a circular waste economy and a sustainable future, a draft Waste Strategy for 2022-2026 will go to Council at the ordinary meeting scheduled for Wednesday 10 November 2021, which once endorsed, will be available for community comment.

“This is the first standalone waste strategy for Council that has been developed from a significant contribution of community ideas,” said Cr Colliton.

“During the engagement process for the Council Plan and the SG2041 community vision, the theme of waste and environmental sustainability featured heavily in the feedback. The draft Waste Strategy seeks to address those issues and plans for a more sustainable future for the Southern Grampians Shire.

“Residents will have an opportunity to provide further ideas and feedback once the draft document is released and we look forward to hearing the feedback and ideas. National Recycling Week is the perfect opportunity for us to showcase some recycling processes we already have in place and to also start planning for the future.”

Businesses wanting to be added to the Southern Grampians Zero Waste Map are encouraged to contact Council. Entries for the Top Recycling Tip can be entered via the Council Facebook page.
