Council’s Cox Street Redevelopment Project is one step closer to kick off, after the award of two crucial tenders at this week’s August Council Meeting.
As a part of the Cox Street Redevelopment, a heavy vehicle detour will be implemented around Hamilton to ensure safe passage of heavy vehicles, and protect the health and safety of pedestrians, motorists and those working on the project.
The heavy vehicle detour is an existing designated/gazetted heavy vehicle route by the Department of Transport (DoT). Heavy vehicles will be diverted via Coleraine Road; Mt Baimbridge Road; Henty Highway; South Boundary Road; Mt Napier Road, Petschels Lane; and Hamilton Highway.
Works to strengthen the Henty Highway and South Boundary Road intersection are required to be completed and operational before the heavy vehicle detour can begin.
Council advertised a tender for this intersection upgrade on 25 June 2021 which closed on 19 July 2021. Council received eight tenders ranging from approximately $417,000 to $803,000. Council awarded the contract to local contractor Nigmel Pty Ltd for the value of $417,215.99.
The second contract awarded during the meeting was for the undergrounding of powerlines and Telstra services on the east side of Cox Street.
Council have been working directly with Powercor and Telstra to ensure the respective services are effectively relocated in the coming months to enable the Cox Street project construction works to be undertaken without impact to the timelines or scope.
Council resolved to enter into separate contracts with Telstra and Powercor for the (GST exclusive) value of $181,107.32 and $600,409.00 respectively.
Southern Grampians Shire Director Infrastructure Marg Scanlon said the project team were pleased to have ticked off these important milestones.
“These were the last two major contracts we needed to award to kick start the project so we are very pleased to have awarded these this week. We will now being working with those contractors to get the work happening ASAP so we meet the timelines for January 2022 commencement of construction at Cox Street,” Ms Scanlon said.
