Parklets to Activate Hamilton CBD

16 July 2021

Council is creating more outdoor dining opportunities for residents to safely enjoy the town’s café scene with the installation of temporary parklets.

The innovative parklets will re-purpose CBD parking bays to accommodate further outdoor dining and seating. The parklets have been designed with the intent to be temporary, easily relocated as flexible spaces.

Council’s Manager Tourism and Economic Development Hugh Koch said this project was identified in the Hamilton CBD Masterplan as a way to activate the CBD streets and has been funded through grants provided by the State Government’s Outdoor Dining and Activation Program and the Federal Government.

Installation of the new parklets will begin in the week commencing 27 July in Gray Street, out the front of Little Koi, Tosca Browns and the Grand Central Hotel.

“Council received funding to make these parklets a reality late last year and we’ve worked with local contractor Sturgeon Equipment to create beautiful timber structures that will assist to activate the streetscape.

“It’s taken a little longer than we’d hoped to roll them out and while we acknowledge the timing for outdoor dining isn’t perfect at this time of year, we know that come spring time and into summer, these will be well utilised by patrons of these businesses,” Mr Koch said.

Council will aim to minimise the impacts to traffic throughout the installation works, which will take place over a two week period. We thank the community for their patience while we create welcoming, safe, functional, comfortable, activated spaces in our CBD.
