The first round of Council’s Greater Grants Program for the 2020-21 financial year will open on 1 July.
The Greater Grants program is designed to help build our region by giving community groups a funding source to undertake new or growing initiatives, projects, or events that benefit the Southern Grampians Shire.
As we respond to the COVID-19 environment, there has never been more need for a strong and vibrant community. Community connection is vital and community groups are a key part of that connection. The Greater Grants Program is here to support our community to rebuild and reconnect following a difficult start to 2020.
Applications are encouraged from local clubs, community groups and organisations, particularly those who need assistance to continue, adapt, build resilience and engage following the COVID-19 pandemic. Applications are also sought for events, programs and ideas that bring the community together – whether virtually or physically following the easing of restrictions.
Southern Grampians Shire Council Mayor Chris Sharples said the Greater Grants Program is an important way for Council to provide financial assistance to our community groups and organisations, particularly in the current environment.
“In the 2019-20 financial year, we contributed approximately $180,000 to community infrastructure, events and other projects through our Greater Grants program.
“The Dunkeld Recreation Reserve, Coleraine P & A society, the Dramus Theatre and the Hamilton Cycling Club were just a handful of the community groups funded last year, while we also supported upgrades to the Anglican Church, a new marquee for the Dunkeld Three Peaks Festival and contributed funds towards new equipment at the Parklands Golf Club.
“The projects and events we support reflect the tremendous contribution that community groups and the volunteers that run them, make to our community. In rural areas in particular, we all know that volunteers are the backbone of our community. Without them and without community groups connecting and working together in the interests of everyone, we wouldn’t survive.
“We encourage all community groups and organisations to have a think about future initiatives, events or programs that may help your town or group reconnect following these unprecedented times. We want people to consider online projects, virtual events, digital tools and training, community art projects and community events for when restrictions allow. If you have an idea or project that you think will help your community recover or you’ve identified an emerging need, you should definitely get in touch with our Greater Grants team. Even if you’re a bit unsure about whether your event is able to proceed, call and have a chat to the team and we will work through it with you,” he said.

Applications for round one of the 2020-21 Grants Program close 4pm on Friday, 31 July 2020. Potential applicants are reminded to refer to the Greater Grants Guidelines to assess their eligibility to apply.
