Citizenship - Becoming an Australian Citizen   Printer Friendly

Citizenship is an important common bond for all Australians, whether Australian by birth or by choice, and lies at the heart of a unified, cohesive and inclusive Australia.

If you want to become an Australian citizen, you must apply through the Department of Immigration and Citizenship, which can be contacted by visiting the website at www.citizenship.gov.au

You can also phone the Department on 131 880.

Citizenship Ceremonies

Southern Grampians Shire Council regularly conducts ceremonies where the Mayor confers Australian citizenship on its residents.

These ceremonies are organised after Council is notified by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship, which handles the citizenship application process.

New citizens are required to make the Pledge of Commitment at a citizenship ceremony as the final step in becoming an Australian citizen. Once the pledge had been made before the Mayor, the person becomes an Australian citizen.
