Flood recovery works commencing over the coming month will see traffic management in place, including road closures, on a number of local roads.
Major treatments are required to roads to rectify tunnel erosion issues. Roads impacted are Balochile Road, Cavendish-Coleraine Road, Murndal Road and Wrights Road.
Works will begin in March may take a number of weeks to complete. Delays of up to five minutes will be experienced by motorist on these roads; however every measure will be taken to reduce disruption.
Tunnel erosion occurs when water travels below the surface in soils that are highly dispersive. Soil is eroded away and leads to the formation of cavities and tunnels. There are a number of roads across the shire affected by this type of erosion as a result of the September 2016 flood and storm event.
Major repairs will also commence on two major drainage structures.
Morgiana Road at the Grangeburn crossing will be closed during the day for approximately two weeks from 12 March and fully closed for a week from 25 March.
Nigretta Road, Hamilton between Moodies and Murrays Roads will be under traffic management (but not fully closed) from 4 – 29 March.
Residents surrounding these locations will be advised of the exact dates for the works directly in the coming week.
The contractors undertaking the works are Willmores, Millers Civil Construction and Linc Roads.
Repairs to the damage caused by the floods and storms of 2016 are jointly funded by the State and Federal Governments through the Natural Disaster Funding arrangements.
These works are part of the $35M flood recovery program being undertaken by the Southern Grampians shire Council as a result of the September 2016 flood and storm event.
Works will be concluded under this program by the 30 June this year. Residents will notice the activities of contractors start to reduce from the end of April as the works are completed and contracts conclude.
