National Skate Championships Return to Hamilton

4 April 2017

Council encourages all budding skateboarders and BMXers in the region to get down to Hamilton Skate Park this weekend, as the YMCA South West Skate Park League Competition comes to town.

The Hamilton round of the Barwon South West Skate Series, comes to our region thanks the partnership between Council and Western District Health Service and is the first round of the interconnected skate park events that will be held across South West Victoria this year.

With the addition of skateboarding to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, the YMCA Skate Park series presents as a great opportunity for young skaters to harness their skill base and progress through a structured national pathway.

The competition will be held at the Hamilton Skate Park on Sunday 9 April and is open to all young people who skate board, scoot or have a BMX bike. Participants can compete in similar events right around Victoria and winners can progress to the state grand finals and then a national competition.

Individuals are also invited to participate in one of two skate clinics being held at the Coleraine and Hamilton Skate Parks the day before on Saturday April 8. These clinics are designed to help develop the skills of skaters and encourage them to attend the competition either as a participant or spectator. Clinics run for 1.5 hours each with the Coleraine Clinic commencing at 11.00am, followed by the Hamilton Clinic at 2.00pm.

Council CEO Michael Tudball encourages all to join in what promises to be a great family day event.

“Not only do the League competitions provide local kids, families and friends the opportunity to display their skills in a professional environment, but it is a great way for families and friends to get together and watch some high-flying action” said Mr Tudball.

Registrations for the clinics and competition will take place on the day of the clinics in Coleraine and Hamilton, and also the morning of the competition in Hamilton.
