Shout Out to Budding Street Artists

15 March 2017

Council is inviting and encouraging all young people in the region to come and learn some new skills these school holidays with Ballarat Artist, Stuart Walsh.

Make Your Mark @ the Park Project is a free street art workshop being held at both the Hamilton and Coleraine Skate Parks during the April school holidays. Funded by Victorian State Government’s Community Crime Prevention Unit, the project aims to engage youth and raise awareness about the consequences of illegal street art.

Council is excited to have artist Stuart Walsh on board to host the workshops, who has extensive experience in engaging young people in community public art projects.

The two-day workshops will be held in Hamilton on 4 and 5 April and in Coleraine the following week on 10 and 11 April. The free workshops will run from 10.00am-4.00pm each day. All materials and masks will be provided on the day, and the event is open to community members aged 10-25 years. Younger children wishing to attend must be supervised by an adult at all times.
Council CEO Michael Tudball called on all young people in the Shire to get involved in the project.

Make Your Mark @ the Park is a fantastic free event running through the school holidays that aims to engage young people to create a sense of ownership over the space, educate them about the consequences of illegal street art and increase their opportunity to explore their artist skills while enhancing a community space” he said.

“We often hear that there isn’t much for young people to do in our towns, so here’s a great opportunity to be involved with a really unique and fun project in your community! We’ve also go the YMCA Skate Park Leagues Regional Final being held in Hamilton on 9 April, so really, the timing couldn’t be better to showcase the local street art talent of our young people”.

Intro sessions at both Skate Parks are being held prior to the two day workshops next month. The intro sessions will provide the opportunity to have some input in the design phase by creating the stencils, which will be used during the street art workshops.

The Hamilton Intro Session will be held on Thursday 23 March between 4.30-6.00pm and in Coleraine on Friday 24 March between 5.30-7.00pm. Refreshments will be provided. People are still able to join in the two day workshops, even if they can’t attend the intro sessions.
