Council seeks feedback on Heritage Strategy

23 August 2018

Southern Grampians Shire Council invites the public to have their say on the first draft of the Southern Grampians Heritage Strategy.

The Heritage Strategy is a whole-of-Council work plan to inform the management, promotion and celebration of the Shire’s cultural heritage.

Southern Grampians Shire Council CEO Michael Tudball said the draft strategy has been prepared to guide Council in its role as a responsible authority making decisions on heritage matters, managing significant assets and advocating for economic development and tourism.

“The strategy contains an audit of Council’s work done to date, recent achievements, present challenges and sets out an action plan of work to be done in the future,” Mr Tudball said.

“Council also acknowledges the important role traditional owners, residents and community groups have as local heritage custodians.

“The strategy does not identify the need to protect additional places but recommends future actions to better understand and assist owners and custodians in the conservation and management of those places already recognised for their heritage values,” Mr Tudball continued.

Mr Tudball encouraged residents to view the draft strategy on the Council website or at Council’s Brown Street and Market Place offices and provide feedback.

“Council wants to hear from residents, local groups and organisations with an interest in the Shire’s heritage and those who own or manage historic houses, collections or places,” Mr Tudball said.
