Southern Grampians TAC L2P Program

The TAC L2P Program assists eligible Victorian learner drivers aged 16 to 21 to gain important driving experience with a trained volunteer mentor. Participants use program-dedicated vehicles to gain the mandatory 120+ hours of driving practice required to apply for a probationary licence. Learner drivers are provided with the opportunity to gain that essential driving experience with trained volunteer mentors for a minimum of one hour per week, whilst also providing access to driving lessons with a professional driving instructor.

The TAC L2P Program is funded by the Transport Accident Commission (TAC), managed by the Department of Transport (DoT), supported by the Victorian Government, and coordinated by Southern Grampians TAC L2P Program.

Note: The driving test cost is not covered by the program.

Learner drivers are matched with a fully-licensed volunteer driver and practice vehicle to help them gain driving experience. When matched with a volunteer mentor, learners participating in the program have access to up to seven free driving lessons throughout the program with a professional instructor. This helps learners build their skills on the road while progressing through the four stages of the Graduated Licensing System.

The program focuses on helping young people become safe, confident drivers and to help reduce Victorian road accidents. It also provides an opportunity for young people to interact with positive adult role models, gain confidence and move towards social independence.

Mentors are volunteers from the community who go through a selection and training process to fulfil the role as a supervising driver. Mentoring not only develops new skills but also gives volunteers an opportunity to connect with the community and directly help a young person in a supportive environment.

With a full training process, mentors are well prepared to supervise a learner driver and understand the role and process.

Mentors need to meet the following criteria to join the TAC L2P program:

• be over 21 years old
• hold a current full Victorian driver licence

The Southern Grampians L2P Program targets young learner drivers aged 16 – 21 years who live in the Southern Grampians Shire and who have their learner’s permit. The Program aims to assist young learner drivers who may not have access to either a vehicle or supervising driver to achieve the mandatory 120 hours of driving practice before obtaining a probationary licence. Young people can be referred to the program by youth agencies, schools, parents, or can refer themselves. There is no charge to participants accepted into this program.

Learners need to meet the following criteria to join the TAC L2P program:

• be between 16 and 21 years old
• hold a current learner permit
• have no access to a vehicle or a supervising driver*
• live in Southern Grampians Shire.

* Applications outside of the standard criteria will also be considered, please contact your L2P Coordinator for further information.

Once your completed form has been received, an L2P program coordinator will contact you to schedule an interview time.
