All building and construction, development and use of land within the Southern Grampians Shire Council is guided and controlled by the relevant Planning and Building Acts and regulations in addition to the Southern Grampians Planning Scheme.

Southern Grampians Shire Council's Planning Department is responsible for most of the planning decisions that affect the municipality's environment. Its role is to provide information and advice about the local planning scheme and to process and coordinate planning proposals for Council's consideration.
